A Word of Greeting from Thailand

Dear friends in the Dhamma,

I am glad to hear that Sariputta institute has been successful in providing oppor-tunities for those who are interested in Buddhist teachings, so they can learn and practice the Dhamma in Germany.

As we are living in a world of profound confusion, steep darkness and whirling doubts, the light of wisdom is crucial for leading our lives out of the vortex of greed, anger and delusion.

Trying to learn more about life from the Dhamma perspective will help us to see how we can deal with problems in life in a skillful way.

May I wish everyone who involves in Sariputta institute all the best. May we all gain the real understanding of life and be

free from self corruption until we reach the ultimate goal of this practice, the true happiness in the mind.

A Word of Greeting from England

Dear Buddhist friends,

Buddhism in the West has mainly been popular through the teaching of meditation which many people have tried with different levels of success.

In recent years the practice of meditation has been promoted far and wide, outside the Buddhist context, by quoting scientific research which points to beneficial effects on the body and brain that can be measured. Inspired by that, some people undertake this practice expecting quick results and improving the quality of their lives.

However, despite the obvious benefits, this kind of approach is still very superficial because it fails to address the whole extent of human life which the Buddha’s teaching is aimed at. In particular the Buddha teaches that our actions and behaviour spring from our habitual ways of thinking. If the concepts and terms that we use to think about ‚ourself‘ are based in delusion and not informed by wisdom, we are going to be struggling with our meditation practice for a long time.

Therefore it is advisable to learn and study some of the Buddha’s teachings which have been masterfully formulated by him in order to ’straighten out our views‘. This will help us with disentangling our confused inner world and open a new outlook on life.

The things that we have studied (pariyatti) we then put into practice (patipatti) so that we can taste the results of it (pativedha).

A Word of Greeting from Uganda

Greetings to all of you,

and welcome to the Fall/Winter semester 2014/15 ! The need for an academic study of Buddhism in order to overcome stress and meet the challenges of the modern world cannot be overstated.

According to Buddhism, education means “to bring forth”. And the Buddha organized his teaching in order to bring forth not only knowledge, but also wisdom through boththeoretical reflection and practical meditation as due methods of mental development.

Therefore, Buddhism is a mission of education that leads to peace, higher knowledge, enlightenment and final awakening. Using the latest technology, the Sariputta Institute has spared no effort to teach Buddhism in order to reach people with limited access to teachers and Buddhist monasteries.

The courses one can enroll in free of charge are carefully designed not only to cover the theory and to offer a venue for Buddhist meditation, but also many other issues in the modern society. Personally, I believe that the Sariputtta Institute is the first and only one of its kind in Germany to provide such education based on the original teachings of the Buddha. Therefore, I encourage you all to enroll in the Dhamma classes which are generously offered.

Sincerely yours in the Dhamma,

Bhikkhu Buddharakkhita Thera

Dear fellow Buddhists,

soon after I had moved to Germany, I started looking for a Buddhist monastery near the place I live in Upper Bavaria. As a practicing Buddhist from Burma I greatly rejoice in having found Bodhi Vihara in Freising.

Not only can I find there spiritual guidance, practice meditation and celebrate Buddhist religious ceremonies together with other Buddhist followers from the area. I am also offered the opportunity to expand my Buddhist knowledge and deepen the understanding of the religion which I started to learn in my home country since I was a young child. For this I really would like to say thanks to all members of the Bodhi Vihara community.

One very special thing at Bodhi Vihara is that it offers a rich curriculum on different aspects of Buddhist practice, covering both theoretical and practical aspects of the Buddha’s teaching and Buddhist culture. This Buddhist education program is organized under the name “Sariputta Institute” and can be found online and in print at the temple.

Moreover, I am very glad that the resident monk Venerable Thitadhammo is also happy to travel far and near to teach mediation and Buddhist knowledge whenever requested. As a mother of two kids, I am not always free to travel to Freising, so I am relieved to know that we can arrange a Dhamma talk for me and my friends.

From the depth of my heart I want to wish all the best for the ongoing development of Bodhi Vihara monastery & Sariputta Insititute and to everyone who practices Buddhism there in order to find true peace and happiness through the wisdom of the Buddha.

Finally, wherever we come from, be it Germany or Burma – let us join hands, so we can assist each other to travel on the path to Nibbana and testify the truth of the Buddha’s teaching together! May the Buddhasasana last long and may the Dhamma friendship between Burmese and German Buddhists increase constantly.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Dhamma,

my name is Bhikkhu Kusalasami from Myanmar. I have been invited by the Bodhi Vihara community to serve as the new director of Sariputta Institute. However, I humbly would like to say that the word ‘director’ is a very big title for me. In Myanmar I finished a degree called Sasanadhaja-Dhammacariya which is equivalent to a B.A. in Buddhist studies. Later I received an M.A. from Kelaniya University in Sri Lanka. It seems that I am a well educated monk in regard to the Buddhist teachings. Yes, one might say so, yet only in context of the Burmese traditional teaching style, but not in an academic international style.

In Myanmar teaching Buddhism to novices or young monks is very easy, because it is mostly based on traditional patterns of learning and a lot of learning by heart. Furthermore there is no language barrier either as we can study in our own mother tongue. The situation in Germany on the other hand is very different from Myanmar. This is the reason why I was hesitating to accept Venerable Thitadhammo’s kind request to teach here. Anyhow, I am here now and together with you all. I will definitely try as best I can.

My friend Venerable Thitadhammo is one of the very few monks who wants to promote the Buddhist way of life in this country. This is the reason why he has been making great and successful efforts so you all have the opportunity to learn about the Buddhist teachings.

The life of monks in Buddhism fully relies on supporters, also called dayakas. Here in Freising, only few people know and understand Ven. Thitadhammo’s aspiration to promote Buddhism in Germany. My purpose of coming here is not to convert other religious believers but to give advice and offer Buddhist instructions, only in the case when there are people who request me to do so. I will gladly share Venerable Thitadhammo’s aspiration to offer you access to Buddhist education.

Ven. Thitadhammo wishes to help people who are interested in Buddhism and who want to understand the Buddhist way of life which leads to happiness and peace. So do I.

Therefore we have now prepared a new curriculum for our Sariputta Institute. It is intended to assist students in order to get a good understanding of the doctrine and a reliable grasp of the practical aspects of the Buddha’s teachings.

So now the opportunity to get to understand Buddhism better is knocking on your door! Whether to open this door, on the other hand, is your own free decision. Chose wisely!

May you all be well, happy and at peace!

With metta,

Bhikkhu Kusalasami
